To Appear with Christ (12/24/2023)

Fourth in a series in Colossians 3

When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4).

Paul here completes the picture he begins in chapter 2 (2:11-12) where he makes the point that spiritual life begins at baptism with our death to the world; here he says this earthly sojourn culminates in the completion of our spiritual journey on the earth when we appear with Jesus on that final day.

Inserted into this closing picture is that Jesus is “our life,” thus reiterating Paul’s special emphasis on our placing our priorities in the right place in this life. Christ is “our life” when we put Him and His work first and then live in such a way as to demonstrate that fact.

It is when we “appear with Him in glory”—that is, at the resurrection—that we can come to the full realization of the priceless value of our having placed our life with “Christ in God.” Our efforts for that wonderful spiritual reward will all be worth it! It is at that time that, indeed, death will be swallowed up in victory.
