Stand Still and Listen to God (1/19/2025)

Teachings from Job 37

“He causes it to come.

Whether for correction,

Or for His land,

Or for mercy”

Listen to this, O Job.

Stand still and consider the wondrous work of God (Job 37:13-14).

As Elihu has continued his discourse in the preceding verses, he has used wintertime to convince Job of the majesty and power of God. He points out it is God’s power that causes snow to fall, light and heavy rain to come, beasts to hibernate, ice to form, and clouds to swirl.

Speaking of God’s wonderful miraculous creation, Elihu says God has His own purposes in allowing different phenomenon of weather to occur. He has used it to cause His people to listen to Him, he has used it for the good of the land, and he has used it to relieve people in distress. Then, through the natural process God set in motion, we now enjoy the same benefits from weather phenomenon.

But, discussing weather is not Elihu’s purpose: it is to bring Job back to the reality of the power God has over every aspect of humanity, including the severe problems Job has endured. Elihu just says, “Listen” to get Job’s attention

The intent of Elihu’s message is clear: the difficulties Job has suffered should not cause him to doubt God’s power nor God’s concern for Job—he should hold on to his faith.
