“I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.“ I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved” (Psalm 16:7-8).
David makes this expression of insightful and heartfelt devotion to God, describing both his gratitude for God’s instruction and his appreciation for the relationship he has with Him. Peter actually quotes from this psalm in his first gospel sermon in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:25-28), tying it to Jesus and His resurrection.
In this psalm, David is thankful for the Lord’s having given him “counsel” and says he meditates on that counsel during his “night sessions,” that is, when he lies down for sleep at night.
As well, David keeps the Lord in the forefront of his mind and even continually realizes He is always with him. Because of this dedicated devotion, David gives assurance that he will allow nothing to drive him away from God.
Such resolve surely inspires us if we are serious about having a wholesome relationship with God and about going to heaven. With God having provided for us spiritually and with our placing Him ever before us, we can feel the comfort of His presence and the assurance that we can be with Him some day.
