“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
The Bible itself contains so much evidence of its own truthfulness and trustworthiness that serious Bible students have no doubt that the scriptures are all they claim to be as a divine record.
Not only is the Bible filled with beautiful pieces of writing, but, more importantly, it contains spiritual truths that provide the guidance we need to please God and make heaven our eternal home. As Jesus says here, God’s word is truth.
The word “sanctify” means to set apart, to declare holy, or to consecrate. “Truth” is information that is accepted as fact in accordance with evidence presented. It is through a serious study and careful application of God’s word that we can know what God wants, thus being able to take the actions necessary to please Him.
As disciples of Jesus, we must always exercise extreme care in the way we approach His word: we can approach it neither casually nor loosely, lest it appear that we do not understand its relevance to our lives and its importance to our relationship with God. His truth is the basis for that relationship.
