“And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” (Hebrews 5:9).
The writer of this book has been teaching Christians that even Jesus had to be obedient to the Father; in fact, it is because of His obedience that He was “perfected”—that is, in every way, He submitted to God, doing everything God told Him to do.
As a result, Jesus was qualified to become the “author”—writer, creator, the cause behind, the contributing factor—of “salvation” for all people who would follow His example and obey God. “Salvation” refers to our spiritual deliverance from the consequences of sin, which is a violation of God’s recorded word.
Obedience, then, is not to be taken lightly—it is quite a serious matter. The message is that we must read and study God’s word, dedicate ourselves to obeying what we have studied by seeking God’s forgiveness, and then look forward to spending eternity with God and Christ in heaven.
